Get Ready to Ace the CPC!

The Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam is a significant milestone for medical coders aiming to validate their expertise and advance their careers. Whether you're taking the exam in person or through AAPC's live online proctoring, proper preparation and strategic planning are key to success. Drawing from the experiences of recent test-takers over on r/MedicalCoding, we've compiled ten essential tips to help you navigate exam day with confidence.

Ten Tips and Tricks for Acing the CPC on Exam Day

In addition to the obvious stuff like bringing your books and tabs, having a clean workspace, the most important tip is to be calm. You've studied, you've prepared - you've got your codes inside and out. You've got this.

What your desk should look like on exam day - clean. Don't forget to check your computer.

1. Test Your Technology Ahead of Time

If you're taking the exam online, ensure your computer meets all technical requirements well in advance. Test your equipment and internet connection to avoid any last-minute glitches. A wired internet connection is more reliable than Wi-Fi and can prevent unexpected disconnections. Have a backup plan for technical issues, such as knowing how to quickly reboot your system or having technical support contact information readily available.

2. Set Up a Distraction-Free Environment

Your testing area should be clean, quiet, and free from distractions. Remove any unnecessary items to comply with proctoring rules. Good lighting is essential so the proctor can see you clearly throughout the exam. Inform family members or roommates about your schedule to minimize interruptions.

3. Familiarize Yourself with Proctoring Rules

Understanding the proctoring guidelines is crucial for a smooth exam experience. You must remain within the camera's view at all times, so have water and any allowed materials within reach before starting. Know how to communicate with the proctor discreetly using the chat function if you encounter any issues during the exam.

4. Manage Your Time Effectively

The CPC exam consists of 100 questions to be completed in 4 hours, giving you roughly two minutes per question. Keep an eye on the clock and pace yourself accordingly. If you find a question particularly challenging, mark it and move on—you can return to it later if time permits.

5. Utilize Your Coding Manuals Wisely

Your coding manuals are your most valuable resources during the exam. Ensure they are properly tabbed and highlighted, adhering to AAPC's guidelines on allowable annotations. Familiarize yourself with the index and appendices to quickly locate information. Efficient navigation can save precious time.

The most important piece of preparation on exam day - don't forget your ICD-10 resources. Only the current and 1 most recent year (i.e., 2024 and 2023), are valid for the exam.

6. Read Questions Carefully

Pay close attention to each question, noting keywords and phrases that indicate specific coding guidelines. Misreading a question can lead to errors, even if you know the material. Take a moment to fully understand what's being asked before searching for the answer.

7. Use the Process of Elimination

When unsure about an answer, use the process of elimination to narrow down your choices. Eliminating clearly incorrect options increases your chances of selecting the correct one. This strategy is especially helpful for complex questions.

8. Stay Calm and Focused

Managing exam anxiety is essential for optimal performance. If you start feeling overwhelmed, take a few deep breaths to refocus. Remember, you've prepared for this moment. Maintaining a calm mindset helps you think clearly and work efficiently.

9. Prepare for Post-Exam Procedures

After completing the exam, understand that results may take a few days to a couple of weeks. Use this time to relax and recharge. Consider exploring continuing education opportunities or joining professional groups to stay connected with the coding community.

10. Network with Other Professionals

Connecting with fellow medical coders can provide support and valuable insights. Engage in forums, social media groups, or local chapters to share experiences and resources. Networking helps you stay updated on industry trends and may open doors for future opportunities.

If you don't yet have any fellow Medical Coders-To-Be, Reddit is a great place to start! There is a ton of great information on there, and people are extremely friendly.

Networking and support can make all the difference in your medical coding journey.

You're on your way to becoming a Certified Professional Coder!

Passing the CPC exam is a commendable achievement that opens doors to new professional avenues. By following these ten tips, you'll be better prepared to tackle exam day with confidence and poise.

What are the requirements for taking a Live Remote Proctored Exam?

The live remote exam requirements include:

  • A laptop computer with at least 2 GB of RAM (to run the remote exam software)
  • A webcam with at least 720p resolution, and a 6-ft long cord. The proctor will need to see your face, hands, keyboard, and the area surrounding your desk, so make sure it is positioned in a way that is comfortable for you. A lot of people like to use a small tripod, like this one from Amazon.
  • Your current AAPC membership
  • A valid photo ID, to confirm your name with the proctor

How long is the CPC Exam?

The CPC exam is 100 questions long, and is completed in 4 hours. This leaves about 2 minutes for each question. If you'd like some practice, check out our 100% free full-length CPC practice exam, and let us know what you think!

What will the instructions look like on exam day?

Wondering what the AAPC instructions look like on exam day? Check out their Official Examinee Guide, including test instructions, prohibited items, and required materials.

What will the proctor ask?

The proctor won't do much once you've started the exam - but he will check you out thoroughly before the exam to make sure you don't have any extra notes, cameras, or computer screens around that someone less scrupulous than you might use to look up answers.

However, once the exam starts, they will expect absolute quiet in the room - so if you're an out-loud thinker, perhaps try to practice thinking in your head a few days before exam day!

Who actually proctors the exam?

The CPC exam is currently proctored by the AAPC's testing partner, Meazure Learning. If you're taking the test in-person, the exam site will be at one of their test centers. If you're taking the exam online, one of their highly-trained proctors will be there virtually to guide you through.

How do I schedule my exam?

Once you have your AAPC membership and have purchased your exam attempts online, you'll be able to schedule online through Meazure Learning's website.

When you purchase your exam attempts, you'll receive an email from Meazure Learning with more details on how to schedule your exam date.

I'm nervous! Can I reschedule my exam?

Yes! You can reschedule your CPC exam up to 48 hours before the test date. If you cancel within 48 hours of the exam, your exam will be cancelled, but you will be considered a "no-show" - so cancel early!

Either way, there is no fee to cancel or reschedule your exam. All rescheduling can be done online through Meazure Learning's portal.

What can I have in the room with me during the CPC exam?

The CPC is pretty strict! To keep the test-taking policy fair for everyone, the room needs to be clear of:

  • Extra screens
  • Extra Computers
  • Whiteboards, Calendars, and Sticky Notes, and any other place that might serve as a note-taking surface
  • Cell and mobile phones, after the initial check-in process is complete
  • The desk where you are taking your test should be clean, and
  • Books, papers, and other items in your immediate test-taking area should be cleared away

Am I allowed to leave the room or take a break during the exam?

Yes! You will just need to have a security check again when you come back in. Just let the proctor know you are taking a break, and they'll let you know.

Do note that the exam time will continue going, though, so use your time efficiently. You can take as many breaks as you want.

Can I have a drink on my desk during the CPC exam?

Yes! You can absolutely have a drink on your desk during the CPC. Just make sure it's within view of the proctor, and doesn't have any writing on it. Water or some electrolytes are usually a good choice - drink away and stay hydrated!
